When a pain condition changes from acute to chronic, our neurophysiology changes in many ways. One of the main changes is a facilitation that happens by opening all the barriers from sending pain massage to our brain. Our sensory nervous system becomes a wide open highway to send pain signals to our brain. Using NERVE BLOCK INJECTIONS with local anesthetics would help to reverse this situation as much as possible.
By injecting the areas close to roots of the irritated nerves we are looking for two effects: an immediate relief from the pain which is constantly bothering the patient and a long term analgesic effect from closing some of those facilitating open pain gates.
The medication used for injection is Marcaine. This medication is used way below the maximum allowed daily dose to avoid major side effects. Most of our patients would require regular injection sessions to control the pain and improve the function or quality of life. Main contraindications are allergy to local anesthetics and local infection at the site of injection. A combination of injections, medications, physical and psychological interventions is usually needed for the best pain management results.
Other types of injections like Steroid Epidural injections to find relief from herniated discs, Botox injections for headaches or back pain, Prolotherapy for strengthening the ligaments and trigger point injections for Fibromyalgia patients are performed in our clinics when indicated.
Overall, injections are very useful in management of pain if selected and performed appropriately by a well trained pain specialist in a safe and well equipped clinic.
